Local Events

There are many events that are celebrated throughout the NPA region. These events range from local sporting events, regular sporting competitions, celebrations and cultural events. Local events that are celebrated throughout the region include:

This is the anniversary of when Cowal Creek elected the first Cowal Creek Aboriginal Council under the Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Act. This is the anniversary of when Umagico elected its first Aboriginal Council under the Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Act. This is the anniversary of the first families that landed in mainland during the migration from Saibai Island. This is the anniversary of when Umagico elected its first Aboriginal Council under the Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Act. This is the anniversary of Anglican Church (St. Francis) of Assisi being officially dedicated at Red Island Point.

Community Events

The NPARC Events Team works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to deliver successful event outcomes throughout the NPA region. Historically, regional events consisted of the NPA Rugby League Carnival, NPA Show Day which includes Rodeo and the Australia Day Mud Rally and Pig Hunting Event to name a few.

Cultural Events

The NPA region has a heritage of rich indigenous culture which includes both Aboriginal and Torres Strait. While the customs and lores regionally remain strong; These cultural knowledge and practices are told through stories orally, whereby, is past through generations via singing, dancing and storytelling. Our culture is showcased across various regional events, namely: Laura Dance Festival, Thursday Island Winds of Zenadth Festival including the NPA Festival which will be hosted during 11-13 July, 2024.

Sporting Events

The NPA sporting events remains an exciting time of the year which includes a local rugby league competition organised by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Rugby League [NPARRL] in partnership with the NPARC Sports and Recreation, and Events Team. This is then followed by the Dan Ropeyarn Cup event which incorporates key representative sides from the Western Cape Area, Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands.
